Cinco De Mayo Review 2015

This year for Cinco De Mayo we decided to go all out. The bar was filled with lively Tejano music, Mexican decorations, and some free hand outs. Jose Cuervo and other tequilas were flowing like water. Upstairs it seemed like everyone was salsa dancing. We went as far as to give our house band a night off and replaced them with a mariachi band to play some authentic Tejano music.  We had tons of people in attendance for a Tuesday. We had all kinds of specials that we plan on having each and every Cinco De Mayo.  For starters we had our regular Tuesday night specials: $2 Long Islands. Then we added $3 Jose Cuervo, $4 margaritas, and $2 Dos XX. We had a few sombreros handed out and a basket full of maracas. It was so much fun and we look forward to doing it again next year.

Thank you all for showing up!

How to have a Successful Night Downtown, Austin

In this post I would like to drop some knowledge on you. By the end of this blog hopefully you will understand how to have a successful but more importantly a SAFE night in the down town Austin bar scene. Throughout this post, you will learn from some of the regulars, bartenders and security here at The Two Gents Ale House about how to have good, safe fun with your friends in downtown, Austin.

Getting ready:

Getting ready to go out is easy. “Depending on which direction you are going to head in downtown, Austin will decide how you get dressed. If you are going somewhere on west 6th street, you may want to dress a little bit nicer than you would if you were headed east 6th street.”, says George, one of our experienced security team members. To help you decide you can use this link to find out all about 6th street here: http://bit.ly/1NUIipy. Once you have decided where you are going, and we all know it’s going to be here at The Two Gents Ale House, you need to decide when you want to get there. Would you rather be the lines and wait on a crowd? Alternatively, are you one to wait a little while and see which clubs or bars have a line? After you and your friends decide where you are going and, when your leaving next is to decide how you are getting there and how you are getting back home. Would you rather take a cab or designate someone as the designated driver and have him or her not drink? These are all the things you should think about before you make your way down town.

Once you have arrived:
Once you have arrived, our regular Catfish says, “you should walk around the town and take it all in. You should see where you want to go and which bars catch your eye from the outside.” After you have decided which bar(s) meet your fancy, what specials catch your eye, and which lines you feel like waiting in, it’s all pretty simple from here on out. Jack our front bar manager says, “Just have fun and be safe. If you need anything, ask a bartender or security guard.”

Leaving the bar:

Leaving the bar, this is the most crucial part of your trip. First things first, close your tab. Next, make sure that you have everyone in your group (make sure that they closed their tabs too). Security here says, “Make sure you use the bathroom before you leave, once the doors are closed no one can come back in”. From everyone here at The Two Gents, “Make sure that you have a safe ride home.”

What if SXSW happened twice a year?

Today I was sitting around with some of my buddies. While we were talking my buddy Chris brought up a good question, “What if SXSW happened twice a year?” So this got me and everyone else there thinking. What would happen if South By South West took place in Austin two times every year. First we thought when would it happen? That’s easy it would have to happen at the end of summer right before all the kids went back to school.

Then we thought well who would play there? Would it be like this year when rap seemed to have taken over the down town scene? Or would it be like years past when it was just about every genre spread out and trickled throughout Austin? We decided it would be best if it was like years past so everyone can enjoy every bit of it.

After that we thought well since it’s going to be happening at near the beginning of school will everyone (audiences, bands, film makers, and businesses) be able to make it out? But just like any festival or big live event the true fans and the die-hard businesses showcasing their products are always going to make sure they are available for something as big as SXSW.

This brought up another question, since this is SXSW part 2 will everyone want to come back for a round two? Not necessarily, everyone that went to the beach, out of  the country, or where ever else they may have gone for spring break will now have a second chance to catch SXSW 2.

All and all we think of SXSW 2 taking part in summer as not only a second chance for the fans but also for the businesses and the bands that were mid-tour or out sick. So what do you think of this crazy idea to have a SXSW at the end of the summer?

Critiquing The New Arrivals

For this post I will be using what I call a taste meter. The taste meter is a measure of how tasty I find something in my personal opinion. The end result will be graded on a scale of 1 (being the worst) and 10 (being the best). Enjoy.

To begin I would like to examine the newest edition of Jack Daniels to our bar, Jack Daniels Fire. Jack Daniels Fire is a smooth and easy down the hatch cinnamon whiskey. It goes down great chilled or at room temperature, depending on how you like your whiskey. Often if people don’t like to take their whiskey straight you can always add some coke to you drink or shot. All and all I give Jack Daniels Fire a 10 out of 10 score on the taste meter.

Next on our list of new additions to our bar is Deep Eddy Lemon. Deep Eddy Lemon is vodka with an added twist of lemon. While we tried taking this straight we found that it was better chilled rather than at room temperature. Later we tried adding some Sprite with it to make it a little bit easier to go down. Since it already has the lemon added to it there isn’t much more we could add to it to make it any better. So in the end we had to give Deep Eddy Lemon 8 out of 10 on the taste meter.

For our third and final new arrival we have, Crown Royal Apple. Crown Royal Apple is a crisp taste of whiskey with a hint of apple. When first trying this out we tried it like the others, chilled it was just okay, and at room temperature it was pretty good. Once we started adding mixers it only got better. But, when we added coke, we found it was clear that coke and Crown Royal Apple was hands down the best mix of them all. So to sum it up, we gave Crown Royal Apple 7 out of 10 on the taste meter.

Maybe you have a favorite we left out, if so let us know in the comments. Thank you.

SXSW REVIEW: 2015 EDITION

Before I begin I would like to say THANK YOU to everyone that came out and hung out with us at South By South West this year.

On the first day of South By South West we opened our doors to EVERYONE. That means no badges, no wristbands, and no VIP lines. To go along with all of that we had started some new specials for some of our favorites including, Fireball shots, Well Liquor Pitchers, and our personal favorite Moscow Mule Pitchers. All of you took to our specials like white on rice. With our lowered prices and it seemed like constant liquor rep. promotions we kept your bodies relaxed and hydrated while keeping a smile on your faces. Once film and interactive was over we began the music portion with a huge 3 day long FREE Rock N’ Roll showcase. We had some of our favorites stop by such as The Kul, and man did those guys rock! We also had a few of our door guys’ bands stop by and play a few sets.

In between all of that we had our St. Patrick’s Day bash! On St. Patrick’s Day we made up a few special drink specials. Adding to our already amazing drink specials we had Irish Car Bombs and Jameson on special. It wouldn’t have been St. Patrick’s Day if we weren’t jamming out to some classic Irish music and handing out free green beads with each purchase of Jameson or an Irish Car Bomb. Needless to say St. Patrick’s Day was a huge success, and we want to thank each and every one of you for coming out and celebrating it with us.

With the reactions we received from y’all we plan on keeping it free and open to the public every year from here on out. So if you missed out this year we hope to see you and all of your friends next year.

3 Reasons we are the best bar in your area.

According to many different blogs, magazines, and interviews it takes a lot of things to have a “good bar.” After doing some research and looking back on The Two Gents I think that we have all that it takes to have a good bar! Some people may disagree, but they probably work somewhere else or are just jealous. Take a look at some of the links in this post and keep those links in mind next time you come visit The Two Gents Ale House!

When we did a self-evaluation on our bar we needed something to go off of. While searching for a good bar we found two posts that stood out to us. One of the links was from Esquire and the other from Serious Eats. Esquire wrote a piece called, “9 essential ingredients that make a good bar.” After looking that over we found that even though we don’t have menus or glass wear we still meet requirements that make a good bar.7 out of 9, not too shabby (especially since we aren’t allowed to have glass ware due to our upstairs desk and the risk of glass falling off and potentially hurting someone.) Serious Eats’ blog post, “From behind the bar: What makes a good bar?” was more technical evaluation of the bar and bartenders. Community, passion, and atmosphere! I would like to go ahead and show you what The Two Gents Ale House has to offer in these categories and prove to you that we do our best to execute them every single night.

  1. Community – The community here at The Two Gents has grown and proven itself to be one of best in our city. The week by week and day by day clientele are what make this bar run. We appeal to all kinds of people. With our very professional door staff you can be sure that we intend on keeping the reputation of our bars community held to the highest standard of any bar in our area.
    • The back room and second floor deck have dance music ready for the people that want to come out, dance, drink, and party the night away.
    • Our patio stage with our house band or sometimes special guests is for people that want to come out and share some good times with their friends and the band.
    • Then we have our front bar with sports, draft beers, music from the top of the billboards, and some of the best bartenders to please your drinking needs.

  2. Passion – Our bartenders strive to quench your thirst with some of the best drinks you’ve ever tasted. To see people have a good time and drink with their friends is what we love to see, so we want to try and make happen every night. Or if you want to come out alone and get away from everything you can get to know us. Meeting new people and making real connections to find out more about the customer is what it’s all about here so come in and see us perform our passion and get to know your bartenders!
  3. Atmosphere – The atmosphere at The Two Gents is unlike any other you’ve ever been to and we can guarantee it! With our four bars and multitude of bartenders we bring the life into your night each and every night. We have all kinds of music to go along with your night out on the town weather you came to dance or just to enjoy some good music and drinks with your friends. With our different drink specials every night of the week you’re sure to find what you need to help meet your and your wallets need.
